Kenya had a teacher shortage measured in the tens of thousands and a graduate teacher backlog stretching back years — qualified professionals sitting at home while classrooms went untaught.
More than 76,000 teachers have been recruited through permanent and pensionable placements and the internship programme, with successive cohorts of interns converted to permanent terms.
This is the largest teacher recruitment drive in the country's history. It is also one of the largest single acts of formal job creation for graduates that any Kenyan government has undertaken.
