Setting the record straight

The claims that circulate most, answered with the actual numbers and a link to where they come from. Where a criticism is fair, we say so — a movement that cannot concede anything is believed on nothing.

State the truth first
Lead with what is true. It is the part people remember.
Name the claim briefly
Mention it once, in your own words. Never repeat its framing.
Close with evidence
Finish on the number and the source, not on the accusation.
Inside the hour
A rumour hardens after about an hour in a WhatsApp group.
Misleading Cost of Living

"The government has done nothing about the cost of living."

The claim ignores the measurable direction of travel. Inflation fell from 9.6% in 2022 to around 4.5%, inside the Central Bank's target band. A 2kg packet of maize flour fell 23.3%, from Sh169.90 to Sh130.38. The wholesale price of a bag of maize fell 25.8%. The shilling recovered from about Sh162 to roughly Sh129 to the dollar, cutting the cost of every import.

Nobody is claiming life is easy. The honest statement is that the trajectory reversed, and it reversed because production rose rather than because the shelf price was artificially subsidised.

Inflation: 9.6% (2022) → ~4.5%. Unga: Sh169.90 → Sh130.38. Maize wholesale: Sh4,729 → Sh3,980/bag. Shilling: ~162 → ~129/USD.
Missing Context Health

"SHA is a failure and worse than NHIF."

SHA had a genuinely difficult transition, and the President has said so publicly. But the comparison being made is not an honest one.

NHIF covered a minority of Kenyans, was chronically insolvent and was drained by claim fraud. SHA has registered more than 29 million Kenyans — the widest coverage in Kenyan history — and has been settling around Sh13 billion a month to hospitals, roughly what NHIF collected in six months.

It also covers what NHIF never adequately did: dialysis, oncology, ICU and emergency care through the Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund, with the poorest households covered at no cost.

SHA registrations: 29M+. Monthly hospital settlements: ~Sh13B. NHIF half-year collection equivalent. Three funds: Primary Healthcare, Social Health Insurance, Emergency/Chronic/Critical Illness.
False Housing

"The Housing Levy is a tax that has built nothing."

The units exist and can be visited. 112,405 units are complete or under construction, with more than 260,000 in the national pipeline — against 8,872 units in the entire country in 2022.

The programme has generated an estimated 160,000 direct and indirect jobs and ring-fenced Sh4.4 billion for MSMEs in its supply chain. Contributions are refundable with interest if a contributor does not take up a house.

The projects are public, publicly listed and physically inspectable in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisumu and dozens of other towns. "Nothing has been built" is a claim that any citizen can disprove by walking to a site.

AHP: 112,405 units complete/ongoing; 260,000+ pipeline; 8,872 units existed in 2022; ~160,000 jobs; Sh4.4B MSME allocation.
False Agriculture

"Nothing has changed for farmers."

Farm-gate income is the test, and it moved across every major value chain:

  • Fertiliser: Sh6,000 → Sh2,500 per bag, with distribution up from 1.4M to 8.6M bags.
  • Coffee: Sh60 → Sh110–160 per kilo of cherry.
  • Milk: farm-gate price up 35%, production up 13%.
  • Tea: smallholder earnings up 15.8%.
  • Sugar: national production 485,000t → 845,000t, with Sh117B in farmer and miller debt written off.
  • Maize: 61.74M → 85.7M bags.

Fertiliser Sh6,000→Sh2,500; 8.6M bags; coffee Sh60→Sh110-160/kg; milk +35%; tea +15.8%; sugar 485,000t→845,000t; maize 61.74M→85.7M bags; 6.15M farmers registered.
False Jobs & Youth

"No jobs have been created for young people."

Counting only the programmes with published figures:

  • 76,000 teachers employed by the TSC.
  • 107,000 Community Health Promoters recruited and stipended.
  • 122,711 young people placed in digital jobs through Ajira and Jitume, with 516,505 trained.
  • 540,000 placed in jobs abroad through bilateral labour agreements.
  • An estimated 160,000 direct and indirect jobs from affordable housing construction.

The government's overall figure across all programmes is more than 1.6 million jobs. Youth unemployment remains a serious national challenge — but "no jobs have been created" is not a defensible statement.

Teachers 76,000; CHPs 107,000; digital jobs 122,711 (516,505 trained); abroad 540,000; housing ~160,000; government total 1.6M+.
False Economy

"The Hustler Fund was a political gimmick that collapsed."

The fund has disbursed more than Sh82 billion to over 26 million Kenyans and continues to lend daily. Borrowers have accumulated billions in savings through the automatic 5% deduction on every loan.

Default rates on unsecured, no-collateral micro-credit are always significant — that is true of every product of this type anywhere in the world, and it was priced in from the start. The fund's purpose was to build a credit history for Kenyans the formal system had never scored, and millions now have one.

Hustler Fund: Sh82B+ disbursed, 26M Kenyans, 8% p.a. interest, 5% auto-savings, 673,340 groups served.
False Economy

"Kenya defaulted on its debt."

Kenya has not defaulted on any obligation. In early 2024 international markets were pricing a default on the $2 billion Eurobond maturing that June. The government executed a buyback and refinancing ahead of maturity, retiring the bulk of the note early.

Default speculation ended, the credit outlook was revised upward, and the shilling recovered from about Sh162 to roughly Sh129 to the dollar — making it one of the best-performing currencies in the world that year.

2024 Eurobond ($2B) bought back and refinanced ahead of June 2024 maturity. No default. KES ~162 → ~129/USD. Credit outlook revised upward.
Missing Context Jobs & Youth

"Labour migration is just exporting Kenyans into slavery."

Abuse of Kenyan workers abroad is real, and the government has never denied it. The response has been to regulate the channel rather than pretend the demand does not exist.

540,000 Kenyans have been placed through government-to-government bilateral agreements with Germany, the UK, Austria, Denmark, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE — contracts registered before departure, vetted agencies only, and labour attachés in destination countries.

The alternative to a regulated channel is not zero migration; it is unregulated trafficking, which is exactly what produced the abuse cases in the first place. Remittances have risen by about $1 billion a year as a result.

540,000 placed abroad via G2G agreements. Remittances $4B (2022) → $5.2B. Rogue agencies blacklisted; labour attachés deployed; contracts pre-registered.
Missing Context Economy

"The government only knows how to add taxes."

The largest single revenue gain of this administration came from digitisation, not taxation. Consolidating government payments onto one rail lifted monthly collections from Sh1.45 billion to Sh10.9 billion — a 652% increase — without a single new tax. That is revenue citizens already owed, which now reaches the exchequer instead of leaking.

The government also withdrew the Finance Bill 2024 in full after public objection, which is the opposite of a government that taxes regardless of consent.

Digital revenue: Sh1.45B → Sh10.9B monthly (+652%), no new tax. eCitizen services: 350 → 20,985. Finance Bill 2024 withdrawn in full.
Outdated Digital & Tech

"Government services are still as corrupt and slow as ever."

Digitised services went from 350 in 2022 to 20,985 — an increase of nearly 5,900%. Passports, IDs, business permits, land searches, licences and court filings are transacted on eCitizen with a published fee, a timestamp and an audit trail.

Counter corruption depends on discretion and darkness. A fixed published fee paid to a government paybill removes both. Corruption in Kenya is far from solved — but the specific bribe that used to be demanded at a service window has been structurally designed out of thousands of transactions.

eCitizen services: 350 → 20,985 (+5,859%). Single payment rail. Monthly collections Sh1.45B → Sh10.9B.
