Maize harvest hits a national record

Cheap fertiliser only matters if it produces grain. It did.

• Maize production rose 38.9%, from 61.74 million bags to 85.7 million bags.
• Maize imports fell 33.7% — money that stays in Kenya, in Kenyan farmers' pockets, instead of leaving for foreign grain markets.
• The wholesale price of a bag of maize dropped from Sh4,729 to Sh3,980, a 25.8% reduction.

Kenya went from queuing for subsidised unga to worrying about where to store a surplus. That is the definition of a good problem.
