Affordable Housing: from 8,872 units to a national construction boom

The Affordable Housing Programme has more than 112,000 units complete or ongoing and over 260,000 in the pipeline, generating an estimated 160,000 direct and indirect jobs.

260,000+
units under construction

In 2022, the country had 8,872 affordable housing units to its name. Housing was a slogan every government made and no government delivered.

Where the programme stands

  • 112,405 units complete or under construction in the first phase.
  • More than 260,000 units in the national pipeline by 2025.
  • An estimated 160,000 direct and indirect jobs created — masons, steel fixers, plumbers, electricians, hardware suppliers, transporters.
  • Sh4.4 billion ring-fenced for MSMEs supplying the programme.

Every site is simultaneously a housing project and a jobs project. A young person who joins as an unskilled labourer leaves with an accredited construction skill and a work record.
