National fibre-optic backbone more than doubled

Fibre-optic infrastructure expanded by 111% to 18,767km and onwards past 30,000km nationally, laying the physical foundation for a digital economy outside Nairobi.

A digital economy cannot run on a signal that stops at the county boundary. The National Optic Fibre Backbone Infrastructure was expanded aggressively:

  • Fibre installation grew 111% to 18,767km, on the way past 30,000km nationally.
  • 1,490 public Wi-Fi hotspots established in markets, bus stages and public spaces.
  • 274 digital hubs set up, most at ward level.
  • 16,804 digital devices distributed to hubs and institutions.

A young person in Turkana or Kilifi with a laptop and a fibre connection can now bid for the same online job as one in Kilimani.
