Kenya generates more than 90% of its electricity from renewable sources — geothermal from the Rift Valley, hydro, wind at Lake Turkana, and a fast-growing solar base. Only a handful of countries on earth can say that.
Why it matters commercially
Global manufacturers are now legally required to report and reduce the carbon footprint of their supply chains. A factory running on Kenyan geothermal power produces goods with a carbon profile that a factory on a coal grid cannot match at any price.
What is being built on it
- County Aggregation and Industrial Parks designed around cheap clean power.
- Expanded special economic zones with competitive industrial tariffs.
- Green hydrogen and fertiliser manufacturing proposals that need exactly this kind of grid.
- Data centre investment, which follows cheap reliable renewable power globally.
Meanwhile connections grew from 8.9 million to more than 10 million households, with Sh27 billion secured to connect a further 280,000 under Last Mile.
